As times have changed, the book has found an audience and reappraisal shows that Fleming’s attempt to change his literary style is evidence of his growth as an author and his stark portrayal of gender politics and attitudes towards sex were too much of a progressive but bitter truth at that time. The deviation from Fleming’s traditional formula received much backlash from the critics, leading Fleming to practically disown his work when selling the film rights to Broccoli and Saltzman, The Spy Who Loved Me had a clause that only the title be used and the story elements ignored. It is not however from Bond’s point of view, but from the lead female character, Vivienne Michel Bond himself does not appear until the third act to save her. The Spy Who Loved Me is not only the shortest novel in the series, but it is the only one to be written from a first-person perspective.
